Many church leaders assume grants are only for big nonprofits with a full-time development office. They're not. Right now there are 100+ active faith-based grant opportunities, and about a third of all deadlines fall in the third quarter, which means the window for this year is open now. The churches that benefit aren't the ones with the best grant writers; they're the ones with a simple system to notice, apply, and follow through.
One worth knowing first: FEMA's Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) funds cameras, access control, lighting, fencing, and other safety upgrades, up to $200,000 per location. Beyond security, funders like the Lilly Endowment and the National Fund for Sacred Places support church programs and preservation well into six figures. Stewardship isn't only about how we spend what comes in on Sunday; it's about faithfully pursuing the provision already set aside for ministries like yours.
What's actually available to churches
Grant money for churches generally falls into three buckets:
- Safety & security, the FEMA NSGP and many state equivalents fund "target hardening": cameras, secure entries, alarms, lighting.
- Community services, food assistance, after-school and tutoring, addiction recovery, homelessness outreach, and disaster relief are routinely fundable through federal and state programs.
- Capacity & preservation, private foundations fund leadership development, congregational health, and the restoration of historic sacred spaces.

The rules to understand before you apply
Government dollars fund services, not worship. Public grants pay for the community good your church does, feeding people, keeping them safe, tutoring children, not for religious instruction or worship. Frame every request around the people you serve.
Security grants run through your state. The NSGP is submitted via your State Administrative Agency (in Mississippi, the Office of Homeland Security), not directly to FEMA. It's competitive, roughly half of applicants are funded, so a strong application matters.
Many grants are reimbursement-based. You typically spend the money first and are reimbursed later, so plan the cash flow before you commit.
A simple way to actually apply
- Confirm eligibility, you'll generally need active 501(c)(3) status and a clear, community-serving project.
- Gather your core documents once, mission statement, basic financials, and, for security grants, a vulnerability assessment.
- Write a tight investment justification, what you'll buy, why it protects or serves people, and how much it costs.
- Put every deadline on a calendar someone owns. Most state security windows open in late winter and close by early summer; foundations vary.
Common objections
"It's too complicated." The first application is the hardest; after that, you reuse 80% of the same materials every time.
"We'll probably get rejected." Some you will. Grant funding is a numbers-and-systems game, apply consistently to the ones you fit, and the wins come.
"We don't have a grant writer." You don't need one to start. You need a clear project, organized documents, and a deadline someone is watching.
